Youths Step In to Protect Cosmos Flowers in Arunachal’s Chug Valley

The valley, known for its cosmos, red rice fields, and scenic spots, is seeing a decline in flower growth.
Chug Valley in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district, famous for its stunning cosmos flowers, red rice cultivation, and picnic spots, is facing a significant decline in the growth of cosmos plants.

Concerned local youths have stepped forward to urge visitors to enjoy the beauty of the valley without plucking the flowers or damaging their habitat.
Leike Chomu and Leiki Khandu, local youth leaders, have appealed to tourists and visitors, especially from nearby towns like Bomdila and Dirang, to take photos and enjoy the valley but to refrain from destroying the flowers and their bushes.

“The cosmos flowers bloom from October to mid-November, attracting hundreds of visitors, but we have noticed a drastic fall in the flowers’ growth,” said Chomu. “Plucking the flowers and damaging the plants is harming the ecosystem.”
Cosmos flowers play a crucial role in the valley’s agriculture, acting as natural pest repellents and helping to protect food crops like rice, millet, corn, and vegetables. The flowers also attract birds such as sparrows, which feed on pests. The decline in cosmos flowers poses a threat to the region’s agriculture and biodiversity.

The youths are calling for responsible tourism, urging visitors to enjoy the valley’s beauty without disrupting its delicate balance.
