A tragic road accident involving a cement company truck triggered large-scale violence in Lumshnong, Meghalaya, on Sunday night, as an enraged mob stormed the company’s premises, setting trucks on fire and vandalising property.

The incident began when a cement truck collided with a pick-up truck near Wahiajer village along National Highway 06. The cement truck driver, fearing retaliation, fled the scene, but the pick-up truck and several other vehicles gave chase, following the truck into the cement factory premises.

Upon reaching the factory, the pick-up driver reportedly climbed onto the cement truck and began assaulting the driver. In a desperate attempt to escape the attack, the cement truck driver accelerated, but tragically ran over the assailant, who died on the spot.

The victim’s death sparked immediate outrage. Within minutes, nearly 300 individuals, armed with traditional weapons, stormed the factory compound. The mob destroyed the sentry post, smashed CCTV cameras, torched more than 15 trucks and attacked security guards stationed at the site. They also blocked the removal of the victim’s body, which was later transported to Khliehriat Civil Hospital.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, while authorities have intensified security around the factory to prevent further violence.
