In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves through the Bamunimaidam area of Guwahati, a woman, mother of two, was brutally murdered by her brother-in-law after repeatedly rejecting his marriage proposals.
The incident took place yesterday night sending shockwaves in the area.
The accused, identified as 40-year-old Sahabuddin Mondol, a carpenter by profession, was the husband of the woman’s sister-in-law.
He had been harassing the victim for a long time, proposing marriage on multiple occasions. Despite her continued rejections, Mondol persisted and had even physically assaulted her in the past, which led the victim to file a police complaint at Chandmari Police Station.
On Saturday night, while the woman was out with her daughter and another girl, Mondol intercepted them. He attempted to forcibly drag her but, when she resisted, he pulled out a sharp knife and stabbed her in the neck.
The woman bled to death on the spot, while the accused fled the scene. As of now, he remains absconding and police have launched an investigation.
This brutal murder is not the one case. Just days ago, on June 28, another stabbing incident occurred in broad daylight near Dispur Police Station. A woman was found bleeding on the road in Punjabi Gali, Ganeshguri, around 4:30 AM. Eyewitnesses alerted the police, who soon detained Rapido driver Raju Burman and two women.
The victim, now conscious, has told police she was attacked by Burman’s girlfriend due to a love triangle, not by Burman himself.
These back-to-back incidents have raised urgent concerns about the safety of women in Guwahati. With crimes being committed in public places and even near police stations, questions are being raised: How safe are women in the city?
