Will a New Political Party Be Formed Soon in Meghalaya Ahead of KHADC Polls?

First Published: 9th December, 2024 21:54 IST

This change follows the defeat of George B. Lyngdoh, former MLA and TMC candidate, in the 2023 state assembly elections.

A significant political development is underway in the Umroi Constituency as leaders, members, and supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) part ways to form the Umroi Constituency Progressive Forum (UCPF). This change follows the defeat of George B. Lyngdoh, former MLA and TMC candidate, in the 2023 state assembly elections.

The newly formed UCPF aims to serve as a platform for addressing the needs of the Umroi Constituency while preparing for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) polls in 2025. Former MLA George B. Lyngdoh, who serves as the UCPF’s President, explained the rationale behind the move during a press briefing alongside Pynskhemlang Sohtun, the forum’s President.

Lyngdoh revealed that extensive consultations with leaders and supporters across various units led to the collective decision to leave the TMC. The UCPF, he said, is focused on advancing the welfare of the constituency and organising efforts to field a strong candidate for the upcoming MDC elections.

The forum has also announced the creation of an election committee tasked with reviewing and finalising candidates, setting the stage for a renewed political contest in Umroi.
