Who is Rekha Gupta? Delhi’s New CM Set to Take Charge Today

First Published: 20th February, 2025 9:42 IST

After the oath-taking, she will become Delhi’s fourth woman CM and the only woman CM of a BJP-ruled state or Union Territory at present.

Rekha Gupta will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi today at Ramlila Maidan, marking the BJP’s return to power in the national capital after 27 years. Gupta, who won Shalimar Bagh seat by over 29,000 votes emerged as the party’s choice for the top post after days of speculation.

A first-time MLA, she was preferred over senior leaders, signaling the BJP’s emphasis on women’s leadership and grassroots experience.

After the oath-taking, she will become Delhi’s fourth woman CM and the only woman CM of a BJP-ruled state or Union Territory at present.

Who is Rekha Gupta?

50-year-old Rekha Gupta was born in 1974 in Nandgarh village in Jind district of Haryana. In 1976, when she was just two years old, her family relocated to Delhi, where she went on to complete her schooling and higher education.

She is the National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha. She has previously served as the general secretary of the Delhi BJP.

Gupta’s political journey began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). A graduate of Daulat Ram College, she was elected President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1996-97, actively championing student-related issues.

Her foray into mainstream politics continued when she was elected as a municipal councillor from North Pitampura in 2007.

She later became mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).

In 2022, she was the BJP’s mayoral candidate against AAP’s Shelly Oberoi in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections but lost.

Despite the setback, she remained a key figure in the party’s organisational structure, serving as the National Vice President of BJP Mahila Morcha and a member of its national executive committee.

Why was Rekha Gupta chosen for CM Post?
Her selection is seen as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to strengthen its appeal among women voters.

She has been actively involved in initiatives focused on marginalized communities and women’s welfare, through both her political roles and her NGO, AAS.

Gupta’s clean political record and non-controversial image made her a natural choice over established BJP leaders like Ramesh Bidhuri and Parvesh Verma.

Unlike them, she has never contested a parliamentary election, making her an ideal “fresh face” to lead the BJP’s new chapter in Delhi politics.

With a historic mandate and strong backing from the party, Rekha Gupta’s leadership is expected to strengthen the BJP’s position among women voters while bringing a new governance approach to Delhi.
