In a disturbing series of moral policing incidents across Assam, questions are being raised about the growing brutality and lack of humanity in vigilante actions.

In Diring, Biswanath district, a youth accused of theft was subjected to inhuman torture by a group of villagers today. His hands and legs were tied, and his body was burned with a hot iron. Shockingly, the perpetrators recorded the incident and made the video viral. The police arrested two suspects, Niranjan Rautia and Ramesh Rautia, the latter being the village chief.

Recently in Guwahati’s Panjabari area, another youth was beaten with sticks and kicked mercilessly by a mob suspecting him of mobile theft. The victim was rescued in time by Dispur police and rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in critical condition.

Some days earlier in Kahilipara, Guwahati, a minor boy was tied to a pole and subjected to horrifying torture, including kicks to sensitive areas and a key being poked into his eyes, for allegedly stealing milk. Videos of the incident led to public outrage, prompting the police to arrest two individuals involved.

Despite swift action by authorities, these repeated incidents of moral policing are a grim reminder of the need for stronger measures to curb such acts and uphold the rule of law.
