VPP Working Towards Forming Government in 2028, Says Will Create Own Leaders, Won’t Indulge in Horse Trading

The party, formed in November 2021, won 4 seats in the 2023 Assembly elections for the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.

The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has set its eyes on 2028 as the year when the party will form an “alternative government” in Meghalaya replacing the current Conrad Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).

The party, formed in November 2021, won 4 seats in the 2023 Assembly elections for the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.

The party’s spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said the VPP is determined to address what it calls “misgovernance” prevailing in the state.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Myrboh said, “Given the kind of misgovernance we are witnessing in the state, we need to ensure that an alternative government is in place by 2028. As a party, we are consciously and consistently working towards that goal.”

“The VPP has been given the mandate by the people to administer the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), which holds limited power compared to the state government. But nevertheless, since we are entrusted with this power, we will ensure that we use it fully to serve the people. That is our first and foremost commitment,” Myrboh added.

Myrboh said that party is clear it will not indulge in horse trading and create its own leaders. “Our principle is very clear, we will not indulge in horse trading. We will not import leaders. The VPP will create leaders, we will make leaders. That is our strategy.”

He, however, acknowledged the possibility of experienced politicians joining the party under certain conditions. “Having said that, I always maintain that we are not ruling out 100 percent the induction of experienced people into the party, provided they are in sync with our principles and ideology. For us, the ideology of the party is supreme and will not compromise on that,” he stated.

When asked whether the party plans to contest the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections next year, Myrboh replied, “We have not discussed that issue yet. We will sit and decide accordingly.”

Responding to statements made by political rivals, especially the National People’s Party (NPP), who argue that VPP must contest from Garo Hills to be considered a statewide party, Myrboh hit back sharply and said, “We are a party that wants to capture power, whether or not we are called a state party is irrelevant. We are not defined by what others say. We are defined by our own goals, and we work towards those goals. We are least bothered by what NPP or any other party says.”

When asked if any senior political leaders have expressed interest in joining the VPP, Myrboh said, “Very few political leaders are comfortable with the principles and politics of the VPP. To be frank, it is difficult for such leaders to join us because we stand for clean politics, good governance, and accountability. The kind of politics we practise is not easy for the current crop of politicians. But I’m not ruling out that there might be a few, maybe here and there, but they are very rare.”
