The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has sharply criticized Conrad.K Sangma led MDA government in Meghalaya. VPP has alleged that the MDA government is lacking accountability and has failed to deliver meaningful outcomes across key sectors despite being in power for seven years.
Talking to Northeast Live, VPP Spokesperson, Batskhem Myrboh said the government’s claims of progress are not backed by transparent or verifiable data. Myrboh stressed that governance must be outcome-driven and rooted in measurable indicators such as poverty reduction, student learning outcomes, employment generation, and industrial growth which according to Myrboh has not shown convincing results.
Criticizing, the education sector in the state, Myrboh pointed to Meghalaya’s poor national ranking in the Performance Grading Index (PGI), questioning the government’s repeated declarations of prioritizing the education sector. Similarly, Myrboh demanded social audits of schemes like FOCUS and FOCUS Plus, stating that citizens deserve to know the actual impact of these initiatives beyond promotional rhetoric.
Myrboh also raised concerns about unproductive spending on projects such as the ITG Point and highlighted the mismatch between high investment and low returns. On the other hand, talking about the power sector, Myrboh alleged that while the government claims Meghalaya is a power surplus state, villages continue to experience daily outages, exposing a wide gap between promises and ground reality.
VPP Spokesperson, Myrboh also raised an alarm that the state’s rising dependence on loans for infrastructure, without outcome-based planning, could become a long-term burden. Although national road expansion schemes have improved some connectivity, internal rural roads remain neglected for decades.
Myrboh reiterated the need for transparency and accountability through social audits and public reporting. He said that true leadership must be judged not by the number of MLAs in the Assembly but by making tangible improvements in people’s lives—something which the current government has failed to ensure.
