Voting for Phase I of Assam Panchayat Polls in 14 Districts Begins

Assam Panchayat Polls: The rural polls are being seen as the semifinal ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly election.

Voting for first phase of the two-phased high stakes Assam Panchayat Polls have begun. Voting is taking place in 14 districts – Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi.

BJP and its ally AGP have already won 348 seats unopposed. Congress is going to the Panchayat poll battle amid a massive ticket-for-cash row and alleged internal sabotage and in-fighting.

The rural polls are being seen as the semifinal ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly election.

Voting started at 7:30 AM and will conclude at 4:30 PM.

A total of 639 candidates are contesting for the posts of zila parishad members, whereas for anchalik panchayat members, 2,608 candidates are in the fray.

Polling is taking place in 216 zilla parishad constituencies and 94 anchalik panchayat constituencies and 1,139 gaon panchayat constituencies. The number of polling stations for the first phase is 12,916.

Over 89.60 lakh voters are registered to cast their vote in the first phase election, of whom about 44.66 lakh are male voters and 44.93 lakh are female voters.

Second phase will take place on May 7 and counting of votes will take place on May 11.

Panchaayat polls are not being held in the Sixth Schedule areas and municipal regions.

Seven Assam districts fall under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
