Voting for Assam Panchayat Polls Phase 1 Ends

A total of 348 candidates from Zilla Parishad and Anchalik Parishad have already been elected unopposed.
The crucial first phase of the Panchayat elections in Assam has concluded. The overall voting percentage until 3:30 PM stood at 56.41%. Polling was conducted peacefully across 14 districts of eastern Assam and the Barak Valley region on Thursday, with only a few sporadic incidents of violence reported.
The districts that participated in the polls include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi. This was the first local election exercise held after the recent delimitation of constituencies in the state.
The Assam State Election Commission made elaborate security arrangements to ensure free and fair polling. Election officials were deployed in advance at designated polling centers to ensure smooth conduct.
A total of 348 candidates from Zilla Parishad and Anchalik Parishad have already been elected unopposed. According to the Assam State Election Commission, the ruling NDA has taken a significant early lead, securing 348 of those seats, 37 Zilla Parishad seats (35 BJP and 2 AGP) and 288 Anchalik Parishad seats (259 BJP and 29 AGP). Independents captured 15 Anchalik Parishad seats, while the Congress won nine, and the AIUDF secured one seat unopposed.
The second phase of polling is scheduled for May 7 and will cover Dhubri, South Salmara, Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang districts. A total electorate of 1.81 crore, comprising over 90 lakh male and 89 lakh female voters, will cast their votes in 25,007 polling stations across the state.
The Panchayat elections will decide 21,920 Gram Panchayat members (10,883 seats reserved for women), 2,192 GP presidents (1,097 reserved for women), 2,192 GP vice presidents (1,108 for women), 2,192 Anchalik Parishad members (1,124 for women), 181 AP presidents (98 for women), 181 AP vice presidents (96 for women), and 397 Zilla Parishad members (199 for women).
The Panchayat polls are expected to serve as a barometer for public sentiment ahead of the high-stakes Assembly elections next year. All eyes are now on the second phase, which will complete this major democratic exercise at the grassroots level.
