Vice-Chancellor Of Sikkim University Prof. Jyoti Prakash Tamang Passes Away

Dr. Jyoti Prakash Tamang, the officiating Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University and an internationally acclaimed food microbiologist, passed away today while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Siliguri.
According to sources, he was admitted just a day before due to a sudden deterioration in his health.
Born on 16 November 1961 in Darjeeling, Dr. Tamang was a leading authority on fermented foods and traditional alcoholic beverages of the Himalayan and Southeast Asian regions.
With nearly four decades of research and teaching experience, he was a fellow of several national scientific academies and recipient of the prestigious National Bioscience Award for Career Development in 2004.
He also held the ICIMOD-Mountain Chair and was globally recognised as the Kimchi Ambassador by the Government of South Korea.
Dr. Tamang began his academic career in 1986 and joined Sikkim University in 2011, eventually becoming Senior Professor in Microbiology.
He was serving as the officiating Vice Chancellor at the time of his passing.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has expressed grief at the death of Tamang. The CM took to social media to share a condolence message.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Dr. Jyoti Prakash Tamang, Officiating Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim University, who left us this morning”, CM said.
“Dr. Tamang was an esteemed academician and a dedicated leader in the field of higher education. His valuable contributions to research and academic excellence have left an indelible mark on Sikkim University and the academic community at large”, he stated.
“On behalf of the people of Sikkim, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, colleagues, and students during this difficult hour of grief. May his soul rest in eternal peace and his legacy continue to inspire generations to come”, CM added.
