US Experts Arrive to Control ONGC Gas Blowout in Assam’s Rudrasagar Rig

The blowout has forced the evacuation of around 350 families, who are currently staying in relief camps.

A three-member team of well control specialists from the US-based firm Cudd Well Control arrived in Sivasagar on Friday afternoon to take charge of the ongoing gas blowout at ONGC’s Rudrasagar rig (RDS-147 A), which has been leaking uncontrollably since June 12.

The US team’s arrival marks a crucial phase in the emergency response, as ONGC’s own efforts have failed to plug the leak after nine days. The blowout has forced the evacuation of around 350 families, who are currently staying in relief camps.

Known globally for handling extreme well control situations, the American experts began assessing the site immediately after their arrival. They also held detailed discussions with ONGC officials and will launch their intervention operations on Saturday morning.

“A detailed briefing was given to the international team about all previous efforts. After their initial assessment, they are ready to begin their operations,” said a senior ONGC official.

Despite several attempts including “junk shot” techniques, ONGC’s crisis team couldn’t stop the gas leak. The Cudd Well Control team brings decades of experience and is expected to deploy advanced methods to cap the well.

Meanwhile, ONGC has continued 24×7 safety measures at the site, including water blanketing to prevent fire and constant air quality checks. Officials confirmed that gas pressure has dropped significantly from 2600 psi to 500 psi. Air quality levels also remain within safe limits up to 100 metres from the well.

The company has cleared non-essential equipment from the area and created an alternate access route for the safe movement of personnel and machinery.

The Sivasagar district administration is working closely with ONGC to ensure proper care and facilities for the displaced families. “We are doing everything possible to help the affected people and are in constant touch with ONGC’s emergency team,” said Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Ayush Garg.

The Rudrasagar oil field is one of ONGC’s key production sites in Assam. However, operations remain suspended as the emergency continues.
