DGP GP Singh informed that these policemen will have to submit fitness certificates within 3 months
Pot-bellied, fat and unfit police personnel will soon be a thing of the fast, at least in Assam Police.
Talking tough, Assam Police DGP GP Singh said on Monday that all those police personnel who are found unfit and who fail to produce a fitness certificate will be deemed unfit for the job and will have to opt for voluntary retirement.
“We have a list of about 680 persons; however, to ensure that there is no name added without logical basis, we have made committees in every battalion in every district,” GP Singh added.
DGP GP Singh further informed that the committees would be headed by either a deputy commandant or an additional SP rank officer.
“These committees will submit their reports to the district SP and battalion commandant. They would do their due diligence, and after that, they would submit these reports to police headquarters, where again, all these things would be reviewed by a committee that would have people from training and arming police as well as law and order and administration. They would finally prepare the list of those who would be offered the option of a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS),” GP Singh added.
DGP GP Singh also informed that these policemen will have to submit fitness certificates within 3 months. If they fail to do so, they will have to go for voluntary retirement, or VRS.
The Assam DGP added that the list includes policemen of various ranks starting from constables to senior police officers.
GP Singh said that senior officers have to lead by example and ensure that their physical fitness is not questioned.
“They (senior officers) also have to lead by example. We cannot have a system where for obesity we are asking recruits and others to be given VRS whereas at senior levels, IPS and APS, we are people who are disproportionately obese,” said GP Singh.
Furthermore, the Assam DGP also informed that in the second half of this year they will do a BMI (body mass index) assessment, which will form the basis for further action.
