Two women prisoners from Myanmar escaped from the Champhai district jail of Mizoram early Wednesday by breaking the jail’s toilet walls with scissors.
One of the two escapees is a repeat offender as she had escaped from Aizawl Central Jail in November 2023 and was re-arrested in May 2024 near Champhai town.
The escapees, Vansuiemi alias Suinunfeli (36) and Lalchhanmawii (44), both from Myanmar, were awaiting trial under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, for heroin trafficking.

The jailbreak has prompted a massive manhunt, with police intensifying efforts to track down the escapees. Authorities suspect they might attempt to cross the nearby Mizoram-Myanmar border and have alerted local officials and leaders to assist in their capture. The prison lies close to the 404-km Mizoram-Myanmar border.
The incident highlights ongoing security concerns at Champhai Jail, which suffers from overcrowding and inadequate staffing. Plans to strengthen the prison’s infrastructure are expected to begin next year.
Champhai jail, housing 118 inmates despite a capacity of 105, faces challenges of overcrowding and understaffing, with only one duty post manned at any time. Plans to replace its fragile walls with reinforced cement concrete are set to begin in January 2025.
