Two Indian Farmers Attacked with Sharp Weapons by Bangladeshi Nationals in Tripura

The victims, Karim Ali and Zamir Ali, both farmers from the village, were reportedly assaulted with sharp weapons and iron rods.

Tensions gripped the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Republic Day following a violent attack on two Indian farmers by Bangladeshi nationals within Indian territory near the zero point. The incident occurred in Hirachhara ADC village, under the jurisdiction of the Irani police station, creating a volatile atmosphere in the area. 

The victims, Karim Ali and Zamir Ali, both farmers from the village, were reportedly assaulted with sharp weapons and iron rods by a group of 10-12 individuals from Bangladesh’s Murui Chhara area in Moulvibazar district. The brothers sustained critical injuries, Karim suffered deep wounds on his left hand and back, while Zamir sustained head injuries. Karim’s injuries are so severe that doctors at Unakoti District Hospital have indicated the potential amputation of his left hand finger.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Karim Ali identified some of the attackers and expressed frustration over the escalating threats from across the border. Kanta Jangir, Superintendent of Police of Unakoti district, confirmed that the police visited the injured farmers but are awaiting a formal complaint to proceed further. 

The brothers, who grow betel leaves and paddy near the zero point, discovered extensive crop damage during their routine visit to the fields on Sunday morning. They informed Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Gate No. 44 about the damage before continuing with their work. However, while returning home in the evening, they were allegedly threatened and attacked by Bangladeshi nationals. 

The attack occurred within Indian territory, raising serious concerns about cross-border safety and security. Although BSF personnel were stationed nearby, the remote location of the incident hindered an immediate response. 

This violent incident is not an isolated event. On January 7, Bangladeshi nationals reportedly attacked BSF personnel at the Maguruli border and attempted to snatch their firearms. Additionally, local authorities recently raised concerns about a road construction project by Bangladesh at the zero point, which could lead to flooding in bordering Indian areas during monsoon seasons. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has already reported the issue to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking a diplomatic resolution.  

The incident has heightened calls for enhanced border security and a robust diplomatic effort to address recurring cross-border tensions. Residents of the region demand immediate measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of farmers working near the border. 

As the situation remains tense, authorities are under pressure to resolve the issues and restore calm in the region.
