The arrested persons were identified as Karan Debbarma and Priya Debbarma, residents of Khowai district, Tripura.
The railway police at Agartala railway station arrested two arms traders, including a woman, and seized a US-made 9mm pistol and magazines, the Government Railway Police (GRP) informed on Saturday.
While speaking to the media, Tapas Das, officer in charge of the GRP station at Agartala railway station, said, “Around 9 PM, we received information that two individuals are traveling towards Agartala on the Jana Shatabdi Express and were likely carrying arms. GRP staff and intelligence personnel positioned themselves at all exit points of the station.”
“As the train arrived at platform number three, we observed a man and a woman rushing to cross the overbridge. Their suspicious behaviour led us to detain them. Upon searching, with the assistance of a female officer, we recovered a pistol and two empty magazines”, Das added.
The arrested persons were identified as Karan Debbarma and Priya Debbarma, residents of Khowai district, Tripura.
Initial interrogation revealed that they had boarded the train from Dharmanagar.
The GRP has charged them under the Arms Act for possessing illegal firearms and is continuing the investigation to determine the origin and intended destination of the weapon.
The police also seized their mobile phones and are working to apprehend other members of the arms smuggling network.
Both suspects will be produced in court with a request for police custody to facilitate further interrogation.
This arrest follows closely on the heels of another operation just two days ago, where Amtali police station officials apprehended a drug trafficker in the bordering Sepahijala district, seizing a large quantity of Yaba tablets and a loaded factory-made pistol.
