The strike would be to register its protest against the Tripura government’s alleged unwillingness to declare Roman script as the official script for Kokborak
TWIPRA Student’s Federation (TSF), the biggest tribal students organisation of Tripura, has called for a dawn to dusk strike on Monday across the state. The strike would be to protest the state government’s ‘unwilling attitude’ towards fulfilling their long pending demand for declaration of Roman script as the official script for Kokborak.
Addressing a press conference in Agartala, TSF general secretary Hamulu Jamatia, said that for the last 50 years TSF has been raising this demanding and two months back the leaders of TSF had met and submitted a memorandum to Tripura Governor S N Arya for implementing Roman script for Kokborak language. They also met Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on the issue but “it seems that the government is unwilling to resolve the issue as are negligent towards the tribals and so there is no other option but to go for a state-wide strike in protest.”
Kokborak, is the language spoken by largest section of indigenous people in Tripura but it has no script and there is a division among the people of the state on whether Debnagari or Roman script should be adopted for the language.
The TSF leader also demanded that the Union Government table the 125th Amendment Bill in the Parliament immediately.
