Tripura’s War on Drugs: CM Manik Saha seeks collaborative efforts by civil society to wipe out menace

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha today gave a clarion call for collaborative efforts to wipe out the drugs menace in the state. Chief Minister Saha urged the civil society organisations to come forward and do their bit, although the government too is also leaving no stone unturned in its war on drugs.

Addressing a gathering during the handover ceremony of an ambulance to Trinayani Samajik Sangstha in Agartala, CM Saha also expressed concern over the alarming spike in drugs abuse and its correlation with HIV/AIDS cases.

The Chief Minister urged clubs and social organizations to actively engage in raising awareness and taking proactive measures for the eradication of drugs from the state.

Claiming rapid development under the double engine government, Saha acknowledged the government’s limitations in solely curbing the drug trade.

As per data released by the Tripura Government, altogether 915 people were arrested in connection with 551 narcotic drug seizure cases registered in different police stations of Tripura in the first 10 months of 2023.

Besides, over 40,000 kg ganja, cough syrup of 2.98 lakh bottles, 3.85 lakh tablets, 18.26 kg of heroin were seized during the period, Tripura Social Welfare Minister Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy had informed the Tripura Legislative Assembly, earlier this month.

From 2013 to 2017, only 425 people were arrested in 404 NDPS cases, the minister said. During the rule of the first BJP government in the state between 2018 and 2022, 2,918 people were arrested in connection with 1,939 NDPS cases.
