Tripura government is actively working towards achieving its target of 500 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030 and help India achieve its target of 500 gigawatts by 2030, Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha said today addressing the seminar on Energy Transition of Tripura held in Agartala.

The CM said that the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) would encompasses solar grid power, floating solar units, cannon solar units, rooftop solar units, micro grid solar units, and other off-grid systems to achieve the state’s 500 megawatts of renewable power by 2030 target.

CM Dr. Saha urged industrialists to invest in the renewable energy sector within the state, highlighting the global significance of renewable energy as a means to preserve the environment and future resources.

An important development is TREDA’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NTPC for the installation of 130 megawatts of floating solar power at Dumbur Lake Reserve.

Currently, Tripura’s renewable energy installation capacity stands at 120 megawatts, developed by TREDA.

To further boost capacity, the Tripura Power Generation Limited is embarking on a project to establish 120 MW and 84 MW combined-cycle gas power plants at Rokhia and Barmura, replacing existing 63 MW and 42 MW projects.

Additionally, TPGL is working on the installation of a 30 megawatt small hydropower plant in the state.

Dr. Saha emphasized that renewable energy is no longer an alternative source but a pivotal part of India’s energy plans, with a range of policies and programs adopted by the state government to promote renewable energy in both urban and rural sectors.

Meantime, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the growing demand for power and the depletion of traditional energy resources, emphasizing the need for renewable energy to address this crisis.

He said that according to the national electricity plan, Tripura’s electricity demand is projected to rise to 2,648 million units by 2031-32, up from 1,585 million units in 2021-22.

Nath stressed the vital role of the energy sector in shaping the country’s future, particularly in Tripura, and noted the various initiatives undertaken to uplift socially and economically disadvantaged communities in the state.
