The incident has drawn strong condemnation from local MLA, BJP’s Kalyani Saha Roy, who demanded capital punishment for those responsible.
A 27-year-old woman, identified as Rakhi Saha, who had gone to Janapriya Medical Hall in Tripura’s Teliamura, died allegedly due to wrong medical procedure triggering public outrage and a political outcry over alleged medical negligence and illegal practices.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from local MLA, BJP’s Kalyani Saha Roy, who demanded capital punishment for those responsible.
According to the victim’s family, Rakhi had been under treatment for the past few days by a visiting doctor from Agartala, identified as Dr T.K. Sarkar, a general physician for sugar and skin disease, who had diagnosed fluid accumulation in her lungs after a series of blood tests.
On Monday afternoon, Rakhi was taken to the doctor’s chamber in Teliamura, where he claimed he could drain the fluid using special equipment. Her husband Sudip Debnath, claimed to have paid Rs 3,000 for the procedure.
Reportedly during the treatment, fluid was extracted from her chest using a syringe. Within some time Rakhi’s condition rapidly deteriorated and was suggested to take her to hospital and accordingly she was rushed to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, where the attending physician declared her brought dead.
As news of the tragic death spread, outrage gripped the town. Locals questioned why such a sensitive procedure was performed in an ill-equipped private chamber instead of referring her to a government facility. Many accused the doctor of prioritizing profit over patient safety.
It was also reported that Dr. T.K. Sarkar had been operating from a chamber inside the Janapriya medical shop in Teliamura for a long time, despite previous complaints.
Upon hearing the incident, MLA Roy rushed to the Janapriya medical hall and spoke directly with the proprietor Sujit Banik, questioning him in detail about the circumstances. Banik was later detained by police for further investigation.
Kalyani Saha Roy stated that she had contacted the authorities at ILS Hospital, where the accused doctor had claimed to have worked. According to her, hospital officials confirmed that while the doctor had served a brief stint in the ICU, he had no experience in OPD or direct clinical treatment.
Meanwhile, the accused doctor has reportedly fled, and the police have launched a search operation to locate him.
The body of the deceased has been shifted to the Teliamura morgue, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for today to determine the exact cause of death.
