Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday praised the performance of the state’s Panchayati Raj institutions during a state-level programme held to mark National Panchayati Raj Day 2025. The event took place at Gram Swaraj Bhawan in AD Nagar, on the outskirts of Agartala.
Dr. Manik Saha announced that Tripura has received seven national awards in different categories for its achievements in rural governance and the effective functioning of Panchayati Raj institutions.
“The Prime Minister believes that national development cannot be achieved without the development of rural areas,” said Dr. Manik Saha. “In Tripura, the increasing number of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) has empowered women and led to the creation of many ‘Lakhpati Didis’ who are now financially independent,” he added.
He noted that Panchayats in Tripura are performing well in various areas, and said that digitization has made the system more transparent. According to him, it has ensured the direct transfer of scheme benefits and social pensions to beneficiaries, without the involvement of middlemen.
A key moment during the programme was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Tripura Rural Development and Panchayat Department and the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis at IIM Shillong.
Present at the MoU signing were Prof. Nalini Prabha Tripathy, Director of IIM Shillong; Dr. Sanjeev Ningombam, Centre Head of the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre; and Abhishek Singh, Secretary of the Rural Development (Panchayat) Department, along with other officials.
The MoU focuses on strengthening leadership and building the capacity of Panchayat-level leaders. It aims to support local governance through training programmes and workshops that will equip grassroots leaders with modern skills in governance, financial management, and sustainable development.
Officials said that the partnership will help improve the efficiency of local administration and ensure more inclusive and participatory planning, implementation, and monitoring of development projects in rural areas.
