Tripura’s inland waterway connectivity is making rapid progress, with the state soon to be linked to Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, and Paradip via the Bay of Bengal. This will turn into reality, once inland waterway connectivity in the river Gomati via Bangladesh becomes operational.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, speaking at a press conference in Agartala, highlighted significant advancements in the inland waterways sector in Tripura. He pointed to the construction of jetties on the Gomati River, which will serve as vital infrastructure for international trade and global connectivity.
Tripura, known for its fertile land and strong agricultural sector, is expected to benefit immensely from these developments. The inland waterway project has been in progress since July 2020, when the Sonamura-Daudkandi route was added to the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) routes. A floating jetty was inaugurated on the Gomati River to facilitate trade with Bangladesh.
Further enhancing the network, a permanent jetty and inland waterway terminal were established at Srimantapur in Sepahijala district in February last year. Authorities are also improving the navigability of the Gomati River through dredging operations, ensuring uninterrupted access for boats and small ships between Sonamura and Bangladesh’s Ashuganj River Port, just 60 km away.
These developments are set to strengthen Tripura’s trade potential, boosting economic growth in the region.
