Even after the death of a patient, when a Minister visited the hospital, there was no senior doctor present.
Despite the Tripura government’s repeated claims of massive improvements in the state’s healthcare sector — including the opening of several super-specialty services at GBP Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and the doubling of patient beds since 2018 — complaints of poor services and staff negligence continue to surface.
Read this -Minister and a leader of BJP’s alliance partner Tipra Motha Party, Animesh Debbarma, and Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma rushed to GBP Hospital on Friday after receiving news of the death of a person known to them. But when they reached there, they were shocked to find that no senior doctor was present, and patients were being attended only by junior doctors.
Later, speaking to reporters, an angry Ranjit Debbarma strongly criticized the state of affairs at GBP and AGMC, the two premier government run hospitals of the state.
He pointed out that while media reports often highlight allegations of negligence by hospital staff, he and Minister Animesh Debbarma had now witnessed it firsthand.
“Even after the death of a patient, when a Minister visited the hospital, there was no senior doctor present. They were all reportedly busy attending seminars, leaving the hospital to be run by juniors,” said a fuming Ranjit Debbarma.
Both leaders expressed their deep concern and anger over the situation, with Ranjit Debbarma remarking, “If this is the condition when a Minister and an MLA are present, one can only imagine the plight of common people seeking treatment.”
Calling for urgent intervention, the MLA urged Chief Minister Manik Saha — who also holds the Health portfolio — to take necessary steps to ensure that doctors at GBP Hospital are more caring, responsible, and humble in dealing with patients.
