Tripura is gearing up for the three-tier Panchayat elections, with polling officials and security personnel beginning deployment towards their polling stations across the state on Wednesday for the elections scheduled to take place tomorrow.
Armed with ballot boxes and essential polling materials, they set out today to ensure a smooth electoral process.
The voting is slated to start at 7 AM and conclude at 4 PM.
This election sees the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieving a remarkable feat by securing a majority of the gram panchayat seats uncontested.
Out of the 6,370 seats in the gram panchayat bodies, the BJP has already clinched 4,550 seats without opposition, translating unopposed win to over 71 percent of the total seats.
For the remaining 1,819 seats, a contested battle will ensue. The BJP has put forth candidates in 1,818 of these seats, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) fields 1,222 candidates. The Congress party has 731 contenders, TIPRA Motha 138, and several independent candidates are also vying for positions. Interestingly, one seat in the Dukli gram panchayat remains vacant.
The scenario is similar in the Panchayat Samity bodies. Here, out of 423 seats, 244 were won uncontested by the BJP. The remaining 189 seats will witness a competitive election with the BJP contesting 188 seats, CPIM 148, Congress 98, and TIPRA Motha 11.
In the Zilla Parishad bodies, 20 out of 116 seats were uncontested by the ruling BJP, leaving 96 seats to be contested. The BJP has candidates in all 96 seats, CPIM in 81, Congress in 76, TIPRA Motha in 2, and there are seven independent candidates as well.
Overall, the upcoming elections will see 8,998 candidates from various political factions competing for the gram panchayat positions, 783 candidates for the panchayat samity seats, and 384 for the Zilla Parishad seats.
To maintain law and order during the elections, the state police will be supported by 30 companies of paramilitary forces, ensuring a secure voting environment.
Reflecting on the 2019 Gram Panchayat elections, the BJP had similarly showcased dominance, securing 96 percent of the seats uncontested. The current election continues this trend, highlighting the BJP’s stronghold in the region.
As the state braces for the Election Day, the political fervor is palpable, with parties gearing up for the final showdown. The outcome of these elections will be crucial in shaping the rural governance landscape of Tripura.
