The Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress staged a protest in Agartala on Saturday, demanding the immediate implementation of the 33% women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies as per the Women’s Reservation Act passed by the Modi government before the last parliamentary elections.
The demonstration, held at the North Gate area in Agartala, was led by state Mahila Congress president Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty and witnessed the participation of several senior leaders, including Tripura Congress president Asish Kumar Saha.
Addressing the gathering, Chakraborty alleged that under BJP rule, crimes against women, including rape and witch-hunting, have become rampant in Tripura.
She accused the police of being inactive and controlled by ruling party leaders, thereby failing to protect women and children.
The state Mahila Congress president also criticized the delay in implementing the Women’s Reservation Act, calling it a betrayal of women’s rights and aspirations.
Echoing similar sentiments, Saha stated that the BJP government had passed the Act before the 2024 parliamentary elections merely to gain female votes but has failed to enforce it.
He asserted that the All India Mahila Congress has launched a nationwide agitation to press for the immediate implementation of the law.
Saha, a former MLA, further slammed the BJP for what he termed as a failure of the double-engine government in ensuring women’s safety.
He accused the party of shielding criminals and engaging in large-scale corruption under the guise of government schemes.
Following the sitting protest demonstration, Mahila Congress members took out a protest march, chanting slogans against the BJP-led Central Government for delaying the law’s enforcement. The march symbolized the party’s collective demand for greater women’s representation in legislative bodies.
The protest concluded with the passage of a resolution urging the government to prioritize women’s political empowerment and uphold its constitutional promise of gender equality in governance.
