The much-publicized rally of the Janajati Suraksha Manch (JSM) scheduled to be held in Agartala, Tripura on December 25 demanding the delisting of tribals who have converted to Christianity from the ST list has been postponed by a day.
The rally will now be held on December 26.
Addressing a press conference in Agartala, JSM leader Pritimoy Debbarma said that the decision to postpone the rally by a day has been taken following request from Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.
“Today morning, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha requested us to postpone the rally. We respect him and admire him, which is why we have decided to accept his request and postponed the rally by a day. Only the date has changed; the time and the vanue will remain same. The rally is now scheduled for December 26,” said Pritimoy Debbarma.
Notably, CM Manik Saha’s request to JSM for the postponement of the rally came two days after leader of Opposition in the Tripura Assembly and TIPRA Motha leader Animesh Debbarma has requested him to intervene and stop JSM from organising the scheduled rally on Christmas to avoid any law and order situation in the state.
Debbarma had written a letter to CM Manik Saha citing apprehensions that the rally on Christmas Day might jeopardize the prevailing peace and harmony in the state.
Besides TIPRA Motha and other political parties, several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working for tribal welfare in Tripura such as –Twipra Students Federation (TSF), Tripuri Doctors Welfare Society (TDWS), United Tiprasa Forum (UTF), Tripura Indigenous Lawyers Association (TILA), Tipra Engineers’ Society, Tripura (TEST), Borok People Human Rights Organisation (BPHRO), and Pantwi Sporting Society (PSS) have also strongly opposed the rally and its demand for delisting.
