Tripura Govt To Give Jobs To Kin Of 18 People Killed In Political Violence Before 2018

The committee is now in the process of finalizing its report for submission to the state government.

In a significant move towards justice and reconciliation, Tripura government has decided to provide jobs to people whose family members were killed in political violence in the state between 1981 and 2018.

The initiative, announced by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath during a press conference at the state secretariat on Saturday, aims to support victims’ families who endured hardship during political unrest.

Minister Nath informed that till date 39 applications have been received from affected families, seeking government employment. To ensure a transparent selection process, the state government has constituted a Scrutiny Committee for Assessing Applications for Employment to Families of Victims of Political Violence, which is being chaired by Nath himself.

The committee last convened on June 19, where eight more fresh applications were submitted for consideration. The committee is now in the process of finalizing its report for submission to the state government.

Highlighting a major challenge, Nath noted that the absence of official police records in many genuine cases has complicated the verification process. “Despite the lack of police records in several incidents, we are committed to ensuring justice for the victims’ families,” he said.

It may be recalled that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in Tripura in 2018, ending over two decades of CPI(M)-led Left Front rule. One of the early policy decisions of the BJP-led government was to extend assistance to families affected by political violence prior to their tenure.

“This initiative reflects our government’s dedication to democratic principles and to the families who suffered between 1981 and 2018,” said Nath. “Providing jobs to these families is not just economic support, but also a moral obligation to those who bore the brunt of political conflict.”

The move has been welcomed by many as a step towards healing past wounds and acknowledging the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens during Tripura’s politically volatile years.
