The Benuban Vihar monastery in Agartala, constructed during the Manikya royal era, is a significant seat of Buddhism.

Hundreds of devotees performed rituals and offered prayers to Lord Buddha on the occasion of Buddha Purnima at the Benuban Vihar monastery, in Agartala, on Thursday.

The followers of Lord Buddha are celebrating the 2586th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.

This is the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar, celebrated globally with deep devotion.
Buddha Purnima, observed on the full-moon day of Vaisakh (April – May), marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Lord Buddha, giving the day its unique significance. Lord Buddha’s teachings of non-violence, right conduct, and universal love are seen as guiding principles that can save humanity from ignorance, turmoil, and moral decay.

On this auspicious day, not only Buddhists but also people from other religions gather in monasteries to pray for peace and participate in the celebrations, demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of humanity.

The Benuban Vihar monastery in Agartala, constructed during the Manikya royal era, is a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site.

Tripura is home to approximately 200,000 Buddhists, primarily from the Mog, Chakma, Barua, and Uchoi communities, who practice Theravada Buddhism.

Devotees light candles and incense sticks as part of their prayers.

This year, devotees from neighboring states also joined the celebrations. People from various parts of Tripura congregated to celebrate Buddha Jayanti, and a fair was held in conjunction with the festivities.
Buddhism, founded on the principles of ahimsa (non-violence) and peace, remains a powerful force for good in the world.
