The raids culminated in the seizure of 14 grams of brown sugar, valued at approximately Rs 70,000.
In a major crackdown on the local drug trade in Tripura, the state police arrested five individuals and seized brown sugar worth close to Rs one lakh during two separate raids near educational institutions.
Addressing the media, officer Sen said, “Acting on specific intelligence, the first raid took place last night in the Gandhi School area, a known hub for drug-related activities. This raid resulted in the arrest of three suspects, including the alleged kingpin, Tannakar Chowdhury, who has a history of drug trafficking.”
Officer Sen further informed that the interrogation of the initial detainees led police to a second raid on the Women’s College premises, from where two more individuals were arrested.
The raids culminated in the seizure of 14 grams of brown sugar, valued at approximately Rs 70,000.
In addition, police also seized two motorcycles, Rs 25,000 in cash, and five mobile phones, all of which were suspected of being involved to the drug trafficking.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Tannakar Chowdhury, Ajay Pal, Arjun Sarkar, Piyush Sarkar, and Abhijit Saha.
The search operations were led by Inspector Sanjit Sen, the officer in charge of East Agartala police station.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 against the suspects.
They were produced in court on Monday, where police requested for remand for further interrogation.
The swift action by the Agartala police highlights their commitment to curbing drug trafficking in the city, especially in areas surrounding educational institutions.
Earlier, om May 11, Bishalgarh police seized 800 grams of heroin with a market value of Rs 1.2 crore. Police also arrested a drug dealer identified as Kabir Uddin in connection with the seizure.
