The bank accounts of Congress party were frozen on Friday over an income tax demand of Rs 210 Crore, affecting all political activities.
Tripura Pradesh Congress on Monday staged a demonstration outside the Income Tax Office in Agartala, for freezing the party’s bank accounts by the Income Tax Department.
Protesters gathered outside the office premises at Netaji Chowmohani, raising slogans against the IT department and the Narendra Modi-led central government.
They alleged that the recent crackdown on the Congress party’s finances was a deliberate attempt to stifle the main opposition’s campaign against the ruling BJP in the upcoming general parliament elections.
As per inputs, the bank accounts of Congress party were frozen on Friday over an income tax demand of Rs 210 Crore, affecting all political activities.
The party members alleged that this action as a severe blow to India’s democracy. However, an income tax tribunal granted partial operational access to the party’s accounts until February 21, when the case is scheduled for further hearing.
Following the protest, a six-member delegation from the Congress party met with the Deputy Commissioner of the IT Department to voice their concerns.
They expressed their belief that the central government is leveraging the IT department as a tool to target opposition parties in a vindictive manner, a practice they deemed unacceptable and urged to cease.
Similar protests were demonstrated by the Congress in other parts of Tripura on the same issue.
