Tripura Congress Demands CM Manik Saha’s Resignation Over Law and Order Collapse

First Published: 17th October, 2024 18:55 IST

Last month, both the Congress and the CPIM held separate protest rallies in Agartala, condemning the deteriorating law and order situation.

The opposition Congress has demanded the resignation of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio, accusing him of failing to maintain law and order in the state.

Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Agartala, Tripura Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha said that the Chief Minister has lost the moral right to continue in office, pointing to a sharp rise in crime, including incidents of violence against women, communal unrest, unnatural deaths, burglary, and political violence.

“The law and order situation in Tripura has completely collapsed, and people no longer feel safe,” said the Congress leader. He further alleged a “conspiracy” to fuel communal tensions in the state, comparing the situation to the unrest in Manipur.

Asish Kumar Saha cited numerous incidents of violence, such as rape, murder, dacoity, and political attacks, particularly targeting opposition supporters, as evidence of the Chief Minister’s failure to ensure peace and security. He reiterated the Congress party’s demand for Manik Saha’s immediate resignation from both the Chief Minister and Home Minister positions.

He also warned that if the state government fails to take swift action, the Congress will launch large-scale protests across the state after the ongoing festive celebrations. The party has already met with the Director General of Police (DGP) to raise concerns, but Asish Kumar Saha noted that no significant action has been taken.

Last month, both the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] held separate protest rallies in Agartala, condemning the deteriorating law and order situation and accusing the ruling BJP of enabling political violence while the police failed to act.
