Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday launched the “Cheer4India” campaign to encourage athletes representing India at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

During the launch of the campaign, Singh announced that the state will award Rs 1.2 crore for the gold medal, Rs 1 crore for silver medal and Rs 75 lakh for bronze medal at the Olympics. In addition, the state will also award Rs 25 lakh to each of five Olympians from the state representing India.

Taking to his Twitter CM Singh wrote, “Launched the Tokyo Olympic #Cheer4India campaign in Manipur too as a way of cheering the athletes representing India. We are initiating activities like Olympic Quiz, fan engagement drives, Olympic Symposium and also setting up selfie points to click pictures & show their support.”

Singh further said the state will initiate activities like virtual felicitation of athletes’ families, Olympic Quiz, fan engagement drives, Olympic Symposium and also set up selfie points to click pictures and show their support.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also appreciated the initiative.

“Manipur is a powerhouse of sporting talent. Good effort by the Manipur government to #Cheer4India and to inspire youngsters to pursue sports,” PM Modi tweeted.

Kiren Rijiju wrote, “Let’s get together to #Cheer4India. Wonderful gesture by @NBirenSingh ji.”

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 is scheduled to start in Japan on July 23 and continue till August 8. Over 100 athletes from India have so far qualified for the games.
