Tipra Motha Issues Ultimatum: Will Withdraw Support from BJP Govt if Tiprasa Accord Isn’t Implemented by July 20

Her resignation could send a strong political message and deeply impact the BJP-Tipra Motha alliance.
In a development that could shake the foundations of the ruling alliance in Tripura, Tipra Motha has issued a strong ultimatum to the BJP-led state government.
The party warned that it would withdraw support if the Tiprasa Accord is not implemented and illegal infiltration from Bangladesh is not curbed.
Addressing a press conference at the Agartala Press Club on Saturday, senior Tipra Motha leader and MLA Ranjit Debbarma said the party’s leadership, including its founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, held several internal meetings and decided to seek a final commitment from Union Home Minister Amit Shah by July 20.
“If the central leadership fails to respond positively, we will sever ties with the Manik Saha-led government,” said Ranjit Debbarma. “We have waited patiently for more than a year since the signing of the Accord in March 2023, which promised constitutional safeguards, direct funding to tribal councils, and protection of indigenous rights. But not a single step has been taken. What is the point of staying in government if our demands are continuously ignored?”
He also informed that all 13 Tipra Motha MLAs, including ministers and party head Pradyot Kishore Debbarma—will travel to Delhi to meet Home Minister Amit Shah and press for immediate action. If the government fails to deliver, Tipra Motha will pull out of the alliance, he warned.
In a major symbolic move, Ranjit Debbarma revealed that BJP MP Kriti Devi Debbarma, Pradyot’s sister and one of the key figures behind the post-Accord alliance, has expressed her willingness to resign from the Lok Sabha over the government’s inaction. Her resignation could send a strong political message and deeply impact the BJP-Tipra Motha alliance.
The party also raised alarm over continued illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. Calling it a “national threat,” Tipra Motha alleged that despite a Ministry of Home Affairs directive issued on May 19 to tighten border control, illegal settlements are still mushrooming in border areas, displacing the indigenous population.
“Even after writing several letters to the District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, and the Chief Minister, the administration has taken no action,” said Debbarma. He also demanded that the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which aims to strengthen tribal governance, must be passed without further delay.
Ranjit Debbarma stated that the party’s final decision would be announced after the Delhi meeting. “We are ready to walk away from power rather than betray the trust of our people,” he said.
In the 60-member Tripura Legislative Assembly, the BJP holds 32 seats, just above the majority mark, while Tipra Motha has 13, IPFT one, CPI(M) 11, and Congress three. If Tipra Motha withdraws support, it could lead to major political realignment or even instability in the state.
