Tipra Motha demands TTAADC polls and bye-polls for 2 vacant seats along with Panchayat elections

TTAADC village council polls have been pending for more than two years and two seats of MDC constituencies have also been vacant since last year.

Pradyot Kishore Debbarma led Tripura Motha today met the State Election Commissioner and demanded holding of Village Committees General Elections of TTAADC and Bye-elections of its two vacant seats — Kulai-Champahour and Mandwi-Pulinpur, along with the three-tier Panchayat Elections scheduled to be held in August this year.

Speaking to media, former Minister and TIPRA Motha senior leader Mebar Kumar Jamatia said, “For the last 40 years, ADC was neglected. People are deprived. TTAADC village council polls have been pending for more than two years and two seats of MDC constituencies have also been vacant since last year. Since the Panchayat elections are scheduled to be held between July and August this year, today we approached the State Election Commissioner and urged to conduct the long-pending TTAADC village council elections, Panchayat elections and bye-elections to the two vacant seats of MDC together.”

“Earlier, we (Tipra Motha) have filed a writ petition in Tripura High Court for holding the long pending TTAADC village committee polls and the court in its verdict asked the state government to conduct the elections as soon as possible. The Assembly and Parliamentary elections are controlled and managed by the Centre but the village council elections are fully controlled by the state government. Here we can see the state government’s negligence in conducting the elections. We have put all these concerns in the memorandum we submitted to the State Elections Commissioner today. Now let’s wait what actions they take,” he added.

The petition further stated that votes for general elections, bye-elections to TTAADC, and elections for ADC village committees shall be counted inside the scheduled areas in order to preserve democratic ideals in the state.
