Three New Criminal Laws Will Strengthen Human Rights Of Citizens: Tripura CM Manik Saha

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday asserted that the recently implemented three new criminal laws will significantly strengthen human rights in the country, particularly safeguarding the rights of women and children.
Speaking at a function commemorating International Human Rights Day at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala, the Chief Minister said the new laws, which came into force on July 1 this year, include stringent provisions to ensure justice for victims.
Saha highlighted that under the new legal framework, victims can file cases against culprits from anywhere in the country. “The provisions also empower authorities to seize the property of accused individuals who remain absconding for a long time,” he stated.
Emphasizing the timeliness of justice delivery, Saha said the new laws mandate filing of charge sheets within 60 days and ensure conviction within 90 days, which will enhance efficiency and strengthen trust in the judicial system.
The new laws — Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) — were enacted last year to replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
Reflecting on Tripura’s initiatives, Saha mentioned that the state Human Rights Commission was established following a Supreme Court directive in 2016.
He underlined the importance of fundamental and constitutional rights, encouraging citizens to speak out against atrocities and discrimination.
The event, organized by the Tripura Human Rights Commission, also featured speeches by the panel’s chairman and former Tripura High Court Judge Swapan Chandra Das, Tripura Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan, and Tripura Women’s Commission chairperson Jharna Debbarma, among others.
The dignitaries emphasized the need to strengthen human rights awareness and ensure justice for vulnerable sections of society.
