Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh in a clear and strong message has affirmed that those residing without proper land documents will be evicted.

The Manipur Chief Minister said so while responding to Northeast Live’s query on his government’s stand regarding the expansion and widenning of the Inter-Village Road that will lead to eviction of families in the adjacent areas.

N Biren Singh, in a significant statement also said that encroachment has become a common thing in Manipur.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh maintained that the government is not against those who are residing legally in a plot of land.

He said,”Actually, encroachment has become a common thing in Manipur. We never evict those who are already settled with their proper documents, proper land allotment order, proper Jamabandi (Record of Rights) etc etc.”

However, N Biren Singh in a direct message said that those residing illegally by occupying land without proper documents will be evicted automatically.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister assured of looking into the matter of eviction for the purpose of expansion and developing the Inter-Village Road (IVR) from Sanjenthong to Minuthong along the river’s eastern bank into a two-lane road.

N Biren Singh said,”but anyway we will see on humanitarian ground what we can do. Without touching some area for habitation, we can leave that for them, the road is also very important You know, so we have to do it. We will see on humanitarian ground what we can adjust.”

At least 167 families residing along the eastern bank of the Imphal River in the Sanjenthong to Minuthong stretch are reeling under the fear of getting evicted once the government begins the development project.

Highly concerned over the matter, people residing along the 2.20 km-long stretch of the IVR convened a public meeting on Friday under the aegis of the JAC, which was formed to oppose eviction, and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister N Biren Singh seeking exemption from eviction.
