Think Before You Search: Using These Keywords Could Lead Hackers to Your Data

Cybersecurity firm Sophos has issued an urgent alert for internet users in Australia, warning against a growing trend in cyberattacks that use Google searches for phrases like “Are Bengal cats legal in Australia?” as a trap.
Sophos explains that by entering such seemingly innocent search terms, users could fall prey to cybercriminals using a tactic called “SEO poisoning.” This method elevates malicious websites in search rankings, tricking users into clicking on harmful links at the top of Google results.
Sophos explains that these search results contain websites that appear legitimate, enticing users to click for further information. Once clicked, the website deploys Gootloader malware, a harmful program that can steal personal information, including banking details, and even lock users out of their computers. Sophos warns that Gootloader campaigns often target niche topics like Bengal cat ownership to lull users into a false sense of security.
According to Sophos, Australian users are currently at the highest risk, as the dangerous links only appear when search terms include “Australia.” Hackers use an “insidious technique” to optimize their websites, making it easier to deceive people searching for common questions about Bengal cats or other specific topics.
After clicking on an infected link, victims’ personal data may be compromised, putting them at risk of identity theft, financial fraud, and ransomware attacks.
Sophos advises anyone who suspects they’ve interacted with these links to change their passwords immediately, implement strong cybersecurity protections, and avoid clicking on unfamiliar links even if they appear highly relevant. This cyberattack serves as a reminder that even seemingly harmless searches can expose users to serious digital threats.
