Sports stars who excel in major international sports events, usually return to a grand homecoming celebration, but the wushu champion from Manipur, Roshibina Devi Naorem, who won a silver medal in the ongoing 19th Asian Games at Hangzhou in China, is not fortunate enough to have such a celebration because of the ongoing unrest in her home state.
Roshibina who hails from Bishnpur district of Manipur said that her home state is burning. Although the violence has not reached her area and her family is not affected by it, but seeing all the things burning down, the state burning does not feel so good, the star Wushu player said post her win.
She said that she feels helpless because she is not being able to go there and help. She wished for things to return to normal and get better so that people of Manipur can live peacefully.
She dedicated her medal to those who have been protecting and fighting for the people of Manipur during this tough period.
Roshibina Devi Naorem signed off with a silver medal after a 0-2 defeat against China’s Wu Xiaowei in the women’s 60kg wushu sanda final today to add another feather to her cap.
The first round in the match went to Wu Xiaowei but Roshibina still had a chance to make a comeback.
Though Roshibina attempted to get her hold of Wu’s leg to push her out to the edges, but was unsuccessful. Both players attacked each others thighs with quick kicks in the second round, with Xiaowei already leading with 1-0. But a kick in Roshibina’s torso from Wu towards the end sealed the victory for the Chinese. Judges ruled the second round too in favour of Wu Xiaowei.
Since the violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, Roshibina’s father managed to come visit her once in June at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel in Imphal.
Her coach Kuldeep Handoo and assistant coach Rajesh Kumar Tailor have asked her not to be on calls with them during the training camp, so she talk to her parents on Sundays for a little bit, said Roshibina.
Earlier, Roshibina had won a bronze medal in the 2018 edition of the Asian Games held in Jakarta. In 2019 she had won Gold at the 2019 South Asian Games in Nepal.
