Manipur currently has three Muslim MLAs from Lilong, Khetrigao, and Jiribam.
After a violent mob attacked and set fire to the house of BJP Minority Morcha President Asker Ali in Lilong for supporting the Waqf Act, the Thoubal District Police tightened security around the residence of JDU MLA Abdul Nasir. Nasir, who represents the Lilong Assembly Constituency and chairs the Waqf Board of Manipur, has not yet issued any public statement, even as the Meitei Pangal community pressures him to clarify his stand on the Waqf Act.
The District Magistrate of Thoubal imposed Prohibitory Orders and directed the police to secure the entire Lilong Assembly Constituency. Acting swiftly, the police deployed teams from Lilong Police Station and CDO Thoubal to key locations like Lilong Sambrukhong and Lilong Mairenkhun. They also sent additional personnel from Nungei Outpost and Chingkham Post. At Abdul Nasir’s residence, police reinforced existing deployments of two constables and eleven Village Defence Force (VDF) members with fresh teams from Lilong PS and CDO Thoubal.
They kept Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) on standby two sections of B/66 CRPF stationed at Lilong Haoreibi College and two sections of C/66 CRPF at ITI Lilong. One company of D/99 Battalion Rapid Action Force (RAF) also stands ready to respond. OC of Lilong PS launched regular mobile patrolling in sensitive areas, while CDO Thoubal and commanders of Nungei and Chingkham posts deployed adequate forces to monitor strategic locations. SDPO Thoubal, along with the OC of Lilong PS, now supervises the overall security operations.
Meanwhile, NPP MLA Noorul Hassan released a video message on Monday rejecting the Waqf Act and announced his plan to challenge it in the Supreme Court. Manipur currently has three Muslim MLAs from Lilong, Khetrigao, and Jiribam.
