“We want to teach and study without fear. Militants must stop using education as a tool for money,” said one protesting teacher.
In a powerful show of unity, thousands of teachers and students from various schools and colleges across the valley districts of Manipur took to the streets on Friday to protest against the continuous extortion demands made by militant groups.
The demonstrators strongly condemned the repeated monetary pressures and threats that have disrupted the academic environment in many educational institutions. They carried placards and shouted slogans demanding a peaceful, secure, and disruption-free atmosphere for learning.
Teachers and students alleged that several schools and colleges have long been targeted by armed outfits, forcing them to pay illegal “donations” and operate under fear. They blamed the government for failing to protect the education sector and said it has turned a blind eye to their suffering.
“We want to teach and study without fear. Militants must stop using education as a tool for money,” said one protesting teacher.
The rally participants demanded that the government immediately ensure a minimum of 220 academic days each year, as per national standards. They also called for urgent reforms in the education system, urging authorities to root out corruption, favoritism, and nepotism in teacher recruitment and school administration.
The protest march began at THAU Ground in Thangmeiband and ended at Imphal College, with large numbers of students and educators walking hand-in-hand in a rare public demonstration against both militancy and government failure.
The rally marked one of the largest collective protests by the academic community in recent years and sent a strong message, the people of Manipur are no longer willing to let fear rule their classrooms.
