Tapir Gao likely to be in Modi’s Cabinet 3.0. Check the list of probables from Assam and Tripura and if Rijiju will be there again

First Published: 6th June, 2024 21:16 IST

The BJP and allies have won 11 of the 14 seats in Assam while the party has won both seats in Tripura and in Arunachal Pradesh

As the BJP continues negotiations and hectic parleys with allies Janata Dal United (JDU) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on cabinet berths in Modi Cabinet 3.0, the question that is uppermost in the minds of the people of Northeast is will the region have a better representation in the Union Cabinet this time?

Though the NDA drew a blank in Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya, BJP and it’s ally UPPL won 11 seats in Assam, both the seats in Arunachal Pradesh and in Tripura. SKM, an ally of BJP in Sikkim won the lone Lok Sabha Seat in the state.
The lone Mizoram seat went to ZPM.

In 2019, there were five MPs from the region who were in PM Narendra Modi’s Council of Ministers- Sarbananda Sonowal, a cabinet minister from Assam, Rameshwar Teli, a minister of state also from Assam, Kiren Rijiju a cabinet minister from Arunachal Pradesh, Pratima Bowmick from Tripura, and RK Ranjan Singh from Manipur.

According to sources, Arunachal East MP Tapir Gao is likely to get a cabinet berth at the Centre this time. It remains to be seen if Rijiju will be retained.

If sources are to be believed, Biplab Deb, former Tripura CM and a Rajya Sabha MP might get a berth in the Council of Ministers this time.

With the SKM already extending support to the NDA, and MP Indra Hang Subba attending the recent NDA leaders’ meet in Delhi, the word that is doing the rounds is he might get a Minister of State position.

As per sources, Sarbananda Sonowal, who won the Dibrugarh seat, is likely to retain his cabinet berth. Speculations are also doing rounds that Kamakhaya Prasad Tasa, who won from Kaziranga and Parimal Suklabaidya, who emerged victorious from Silchar, may also be among those likely to get a role in the Council of Ministers. However, there can also be other contenders from Assam including those from the AGP and UPPL.
