In what comes as a pleasant surprise for wildlife enthusiasts across the country, a Takin or Gnu goat, which is considered to be one of the rarest mammals on the planet, was caught by a trap camera above 3,500 metres in Arunachal Pradesh‘s East Kameng district.
Notably, it is the first-ever image of a Takin from the East Kameng district.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Vikas Swami said the trap camera was set in November by the Seppa Forest Division above an altitude of 3500 metres as part of the Snow Leopard Survey programme with help of the World Wide Fund for Nature -India.

The state Forest Department commented on the serendipitous & rare sighting. “Camera trap images of Bhutanese Takin from Seppa FD. It is first instance of camera trap image capture of this animal in East Kameng. The cameras were installed in high altitude areas under snow leopard population assessment survey by the Department,” it said.
Worth mentioning here, the Takin is adapted to the mountainous environment in Asia.
However, owing to hunting and the destruction of natural resources, the animal is listed as vulnerable in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
