Surrendered Militants Yet to Get Rehabilitation Benefits: Meghalaya BJP VP Bernard N Marak

Meghalaya BJP VP Marak highlighted the growing dissatisfaction among these individuals due to the unfulfilled promises.

BJP Vice President Bernard N Marak has raised concerns over the government’s failure to deliver the promised rehabilitation and livelihood assistance to ex-militants who surrendered their arms.

He stated that many former members of militant organisations, including GNLA, ANVC, and ANVC-B, are still awaiting the benefits assured to them upon joining the mainstream.

Marak highlighted the growing dissatisfaction among these individuals due to the unfulfilled promises. While he ruled out the possibility of a resurgence in militancy, he stressed that frustration, economic hardship, and uncertainty persist. He urged the government to honour its commitments and ensure financial aid and support for those who renounced violence in pursuit of a better life.

The Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) and its breakaway faction, ANVC-B, were among Meghalaya’s most prominent Garo militant groups.

In 2014, both organisations surrendered arms under a tripartite ceasefire agreement, marking a significant step towards peace. The disbandment was signed by ANVC leader Dilash Marak and ANVC-B chief Bernard N Marak in the presence of then-Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. Over 500 cadres participated in the surrender ceremony at Dikki Bandi Stadium, making it a historic event in Meghalaya’s peace process.
