Suo moto case registered in Nagaland coal mine tragedy that killed 6 labourers from Assam

The police repoprt says that there were no safety measures like fire extinguisher/equipments in the illegal coalmine

A suo moto case has been registered in the coal mine tragedy in Nagaland in which as many as 6 persons were killed and several others injured.

As per the report submitted to Superintendent of Police (SP) Wokha by the Officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhandari Police Station, the coal mine in question had 4 owners and has been functioning since September 2023.

The 4 owners of the coalmine have been identified as–Moyithung Tungoe, Tsenjamo Mozhui, Akjur Ali and Saiful Ali.

Moyithung Tungoe and Tsenjamo Mozhui have been brought to the police station for further investigation, while, Akjur Ali and Saiful Ali are absconding.

The police report also says that the coal mine owners did not have any permit from any authorised agency to run the operations.

It also said that there were no safety measures like fire extinguisher/equipments in the said coalmine.

As per the police report, the fire incident took place at 1 pm on January 25 when as many as 10 labourers were working in the colliery during the time of the incident.

6 of the labourers were killed on the spot while 4 were seriously injured. All the deceased labourers were from Assam’s Sonapur under Uriamghat Police Station in Assam.

The deceased have been identified as–Majibul Ali (46), Kamal Bahadur Chetry (47), Bishal Thapa (28), Dol Bahadur Chetry (44), Bikram Rai (28) and Kharka Bahadur Chetry (60).

A compensation of Rs 1 lakh has been assured to the next of kin of the deceased.

Taking into account the severity of the incident a case was registered against the 4 owners of the illegal coalmine under 304(A)/325/336/34 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Bhandari Police Station.
