Stage set for first phase voting of Assembly elections in Assam; 375 companies of forces deployed

The stage is all set for conducting the first phase of assembly polls in Assam for 47 seats on Saturday.

Over 81 lakh voters will decide the fate of 264 candidates including 23 women. There are 11,537 polling stations in this phase.

Several senior leaders including incumbent Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Majuli are in the fray.

Along with Sonowal, State Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami is in the poll battle from Jorhat. The fate of BJP’s alliance partner Assam Gana Parishad’s Atul Bora is also at stake. Senior Congress leader Ripun Bora would also contest in the first phase from the Gohpur seat. Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of newly-floated regional political party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Jailed activist and Chief of Raijor Dal Akhil Gogoi are in the fray too.

Meanwhile, a total of 375 companies of Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed in the state. Of the total 375 units, 300 alone will be deployed during the first phase. Proper security arrangements have been made to ensure smooth polling at critical polling booths.

Assam is scheduled to go to polls in three phases with polls due on March 27, April 1 and April 6 for the 126 constituencies covering more than 2.33 crore voters.
