The sweet surprise, specially developed for space consumption by ISRO and DRDO, was the centrepiece of a lively gathering aboard Axiom Mission 4.
Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla brought a slice of home to space this week, delighting his fellow crew members aboard the International Space Station (ISS) with the iconic Indian dessert, Gajar ka halwa. The sweet surprise, specially developed for space consumption by ISRO and DRDO, was the centrepiece of a lively gathering aboard Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), creating one of the most cherished evenings of the mission.
The multicultural space dinner featured a diverse spread rehydrated shrimp cocktails, savoury chicken fajitas, and a dessert made of sweet bread, condensed milk, and walnuts. Yet it was Shukla’s Gajar ka halwa a carrot-based delicacy that stood out, symbolising the blending of innovation, tradition, and togetherness in orbit.
Astronaut Jonny Kim captured the spirit of the evening, remarking, “One of the most unforgettable evenings I’ve experienced on this mission was sharing a meal with new friends, Ax-4, aboard the International Space Station. We swapped stories and marvelled at how people from diverse backgrounds and nations came together to represent humanity in space.”
Events like these go beyond mere sustenance they build bonds, lift morale, and remind astronauts of the shared human experience, even in the vastness of space.
The inclusion of Indian cuisine tailored for microgravity not only reflects the growing international collaboration in space exploration but also highlights the importance of cultural connection for astronaut well-being.
As the Ax-4 crew prepares to undock from the ISS on Monday, moments like these a shared dessert, laughter, and unity remain a sweet reminder of Earth’s richness, carried proudly into the cosmos.
