Southwest Monsoon hits North East India 10 days ahead of its normal onset date. It last happened in 2009

Southwest Monsoon hits NE, parts of Mizoram, entire Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and some parts of Assam and Meghalaya.
The Southwest Monsoon has hit North East India 10 days ahead of its normal onset date. It last happened in 2009 that the monsoon arrived so early in the year.
According to the Indian Meterological Department, Southwest Monsoon has advanced in parts of Mizoram, entire Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and some parts of Assam and Meghalaya. The Northern limit of Monsoon now passes over Agartala in Tripura and Goalpara in Assam and conditions are favourable for further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of North Eastern states.
The normal date of onset of Southwest Monsoon over the North East is around June 5.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued an alert for Assam,Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura,Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days. The alert comes amid the early onset of the Southwest Monsoon over Northeast India.
The Indian Meteorological Department this year predicts the Southwest Monsoon to be above normal according to Long Range Forecast for the Southwest Monsoon Seasonal Rainfall.
The Seasonal rainfall is expected at 105% of Long Period Average with a margin of around 5% less or more.
The Southwest Monsoon is the chief rainy season for India, and it lasts from June to September. Over 70 per cent of the country’s annual rainfall is recorded during these four months. The country’s Long Period Average is 880 mm.
A Long Period Average or LPA is a meteorological term used to refer to the average rainfall recorded over a specific region for a defined period (like a month or season), calculated over a long timeframe, typically 30 or 50 years. It serves as a benchmark for comparing current rainfall data and forecasting future rainfall.
