West Sikkim’s sacred Khecheopalri Wetland has been recognised as a Ramsar site, marking a major conservation milestone. This status ensures stronger protection, scientific monitoring, and sustainable management.

Situated at 1,700 meters in the Eastern Himalayas, the wetland is an important ecological hotspot, home to diverse flora, migratory birds, and aquatic life. It also plays a key role in water regulation, groundwater recharge, and soil erosion prevention.

Beyond its environmental significance, Khecheopalri is revered as a “wish-fulfilling lake” by Buddhists and Hindus. It is one of Sikkim’s four sacred sites, alongside Yuksom, Tashiding, and Pemayangtse.

However, growing land-use changes and tourism have led to ecosystem imbalances, including high sedimentation and pollution. The Ramsar recognition will help implement conservation policies, improve water quality, and promote eco-tourism.

With this designation, Khecheopalri Wetland joins over 2,400 Ramsar sites worldwide. As Sikkim’s first Ramsar site, it sets a precedent for future conservation efforts, ensuring its ecological and spiritual legacy is preserved for generations.
