CM Tamang highlighted the worrying demographic trend and highlighted the government’s commitment to tackling the issue.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has raised serious concerns over the state’s declining population, revealing that the current population stands at 6.38 lakh, a 0.62% decrease from the 6.42 lakh Certificate of Identification (COI) holders recorded in 2011.

Speaking at the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party’s 13th Foundation Day celebrations on Tuesday, CM Tamang highlighted the worrying demographic trend and highlighted the government’s commitment to tackling the issue.

As part of efforts to address population decline while promoting environmental sustainability, he pointed to the “Mero Rukh Mero Santati” initiative. Under this unique program, 108 trees are planted for every newborn child in Sikkim, reinforcing both ecological balance and deeper family-nature bonds.

In addition, CM Tamang announced that Office Assistants in the state will be promoted to cadre-based positions, marking a significant administrative reform. He also declared plans to construct a replica of the Ram Mandir in Rhenock, furthering cultural and religious infrastructure in the state.
