Sikkim will get 5G services before 15th August: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

The Union Minister also inspected the proposed rail link between Sivok and Rangpo that connects the state of Sikkim with the rest of the country

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday said that Sikkim would join the 5G club very soon. Speaking at the release of a special postal cover on ‘Go Green, Go Organic’ at Samman Bhawan in Gangtok, the union minister said that Sikkim will get 5G services before August 15.

“I have checked the readiness of the telecom network here. Before the 15th of August, Sikkim will also get 5G,” the Union Minister said.

The Union Minister, who is on a 3-day visit to Sikkim, expressed happiness to be present in the state, which is known for its organic culture and pristine natural beauty.

He apprised everyone of the prime minister’s objective to focus on the development of the North Eastern States. In this context, he expanded on the operation of railway services from Siliguri to Rangpo by December 2024.

To achieve this feat in the given time period, he stressed on cooperation and sincere efforts from the state government and the line departments.

The Union Minister highlighted some of the technological achievements of India in recent times in the field of communications, the mobile phone industry, and state-of-the art Vande Bharat trains.

He also highlighted postal schemes like Dak Ghar Niryat, which will help young entrepreneurs export items from Sikkim to the rest of the world. He urged the departments to sensitise the general public about such schemes.

The programme was attended by the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Commerce and Industries Department, Information and Public Relations Department, Printing and Stationeries Department, B.S. Panth, Minister for Education Department, Law Department, Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Sports and Youth Affairs Department, K.N. Lepcha, Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, and Veterinary Services Department, and Labour Department, L.N. Sharma, Minister for Power and Transport Department, M.N. Sherpa, HoDs of various line departments, and concerned government officials attended the programme.

Earlier, on Sunday the Union Minister inspected the proposed rail link between Sivok and Rangpo that connects the state of Sikkim with the rest of the country.

The railway minister has instructed the officials to make it a gateway to Sikkim.

The Railway Ministry is also planning to extend the Sivok-Rangpo Railway Project to Gangtok and Nathula Pass (Indo-China Border), which will play a vital role in meeting the defence requirements.
